Three Leicestershire and Rutland Gardens
Monday 26th of June 2017
Meet at Rolleston at 10.00am
We have chosen 3 contrasting gardens for our local gardens visit this year.
The walled kitchen garden at Rolleston Hall is included in our research project. It is an excellent example of contemporary use of a walled garden. There are 3 main areas, in one there is a swimming pool and tennis court, in the next a mix of plants shrubs and vegetables and the 3rd mainly herbaceous planting with roses. The Head Gardener, Tracy Morgan has made the most of the space, creating a productive and lovely garden.
Hill Top Farm, Braunston is aptly named as the garden has wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The terrace surrounding the house has beds and containers with sun loving plants, from where there are paths leading to borders planted with interesting shrubs and perennials. A woodland area with a hazel walk has recently been planted with oak and fir and there is a wildlife pond.
Redhill Lodge is a new house built by the owners, Mr and Mrs Moffitt, the latter being a garden designer, who has created a bold contemporary garden as a setting for the house. There’s a formal lawn with grass amphitheatre and viewing mound (wonderful view of Harrington Viaduct) and herbaceous borders with cutting garden. Prairie style planting shows vibrant colour in the late summer. There is also a natural swimming pool surrounded by Japanese style planting, a bog garden and meadow area.
This should be a busy but interesting day. It may seem that lunch is rather late but coffee ‘plus’ will be served at Rolleston to give you sustenance to see you through.
Directions to Rolleston
I'm not sure which way you shall come, but once you get to the village of New Inn, on B6047, you'll see either on your left or right a lodge house with white gates. Drive through the gates, over the cattle grid, down the horse chestnut lined drive (watch out for the sheep), follow the track through the next wooden gate (over another cattle grid). There will be house on your left, keep going a little way until you come to another set of wooden gates on your right. These will be open for you, there is a sign that says private but keep going. Turn right immediately after the church, drive through the archway, park and give me a shout!
